James J. Annesi, Ph.D.
BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE
Dr. James J. Annesi is a health psychologist and Vice President of Health Initiatives at the Central Coast YMCA, Monterey, CA. He also holds a professor appointment at The School of Health Professions: University of Alabama at Birmingham. Earlier faculty, clinical, and research positions were at Rutgers: The State University of New Jersey, Veterans Affairs NJ Health Care System, Kennesaw State University, Elizabeth General Medical Center, and Enhanced Performance Technologies. Jim was also VP of Research and Evaluation at the YMCA of Metro Atlanta. Dr. Annesi is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Health Behavior, The Obesity Society, and the American Psychological Association (in both exercise/performance psychology and health psychology) and, in 2019, received the American Psychological Association’s Excellence in Clinical Health Psychology Award from its Division 38: Society for Health Psychology. Jim’s research program focuses upon health behavior-change theory and methods applied to exercise adherence, controlled eating, weight management, and the effects of physical activity on mental health, body image, emotional eating, and other quality-of-life factors. Jim also translated many of his over 200 peer-reviewed publications into methods for wide-ranging clinical applications. Interventions he developed cross age ranges and include: The Coach Approach, Youth Fit For Life, Start For Life, The Member Adherence Plan, Weight Loss For Life, and The Health and Fitness Experience. The National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute identified that array of protocols as representing the most by any single researcher or research group in the areas of physical activity, nutrition, and obesity certified by their Research-tested Intervention Programs and Evidence-based Cancer Control Programs. They have been utilized within community health promotion, medical, fitness center, and preventive medicine settings in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan. Dr. Annesi is a senior editor of The Permanente Journal, and serves on the Editorial Board of Health Behavior Research and the Scientific Advisory Panel of the American Council on Exercise.
